Where is Basel?

Basel lies in the heart of Europe on the north-western border of Switzerland, between the Swiss Jura, Germany’s Black Forest, and the Vosges in French Alsace. The city is a part of the Basel-Stadt canton and lies in German-speaking Switzerland, with the majority of the population speaking a Swiss variant of German, and Italian and French being the second and third languages. The Swiss franc is the currency in use.

Basel is an important crossing of major roads between the three countries. Motorway 3 runs across the city, continuing to the German part and further on towards Frankfurt and along the German-French border. Use Motorway 3 to travel east of Basel for 90 kilometres to Zurich.

The capital, Bern, is 100 kilometres away by car using the A1 and A2 motorways. The Alps are only an hour away to the south of Basel via Bern.
