Where is Bournemouth?

Bournemouth sits on the English Channel in southern England and is Dorset County Council’s biggest town. It is governed locally by Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council. The first house was built in the town in 1810 and by the end of the century, it had become a seaside resort for the wealthy. 

With a population of just under 200,000 residents, Bournemouth is 108 miles and 2 hrs 26 mins by car from London via the M3. Southampton is 32 miles and a 36 mins drive. Weymouth is 36 miles and 45 mins away by car whilst Bristol is 130 miles away, the equivalent of an over 2-hour drive.

Moving to Bournemouth


Bournemouth is all about the sandy beaches around its bay – all seven of them, including West Cliff and Fisherman’s Walk (with lifts down to them). A few miles from the main beach, the pebbly Hengistbury Head is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to its nature reserve, which is home to various rare wildlife and plants. 

Art lovers will love the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum at East Cliff Promenade with its magnificent collection of Pre-Raphaelite works, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s Venus Verticordia and Albert Moore’s Midsummer. The Bournemouth International Centre Dorset was opened in September 1984. It is one of the largest venues for conferences, exhibitions, entertainment, and events in southern England.

Classical music fans will be delighted to discover Poole’s Lighthouse concert hall is the home of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Bournemouth is also well known for its prized gardens and parks. Those in the town centre are Victorian and grade II-listed. But they’re not just for strolling in or admiring the blooms. You’ll also find facilities such as tennis, putting and mini golf.

During the summer evenings, the centuries-old and enchanting Candlelit Illuminations thrill residents, and visitors alike. The Upper Gardens host the largest Giant Redwood in the UK. Travel a few miles further along the coast and you’ll find Alum Chine and its stunning tropical gardens.

Compton Acres is a private garden containing more than 3000 species of trees, shrubs, bulbs, and herbaceous plants, all individually laid out in particular themes, such as an authentic Japanese Garden, a Grand Italian Garden, Heather Garden and a Rock and Water Garden.

Just around the corner from Bournemouth, Poole Harbour offers tuition in wind or kitesurfing and sailing. It’s also an excellent spot for motorboating, kayaking, and jet-skiing.

Trains

Find out everything you need to know about Bournemouth train station facilities before you travel. At many Southwestern Railway stations, you’ll find car parking and ticket machines ready for your journey.

Bournemouth Rail & Coach Station is in Holdenhurst Road in the town centre – a 23-minute walk to the beach. There are two train stations, Bournemouth Railway Station in town, and Pokesdown Railway Station to the east, both offering a range of services.

South West trains operate a comprehensive service to London Waterloo, taking one hour and fifty minutes. The line serves Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke, among other southern towns and cities. Cross-county services also run to Reading, Oxford, Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Manchester.

Buses

There are two bus operators in town. The services are particularly good, connecting visitors to the east and west.

National Express coaches run from London’s Victoria Coach Station to Bournemouth around 12 times a day, the fastest gets here in 2 hrs 30 mins. Southampton is 51 mins by bus and Weymouth 1 hr 20 mins. Bristol 3 hrs.

Airport

The town has its own airport, fittingly named, Bournemouth Airport. It’s only a 10-minute drive from the centre of town, with flights going to the various Mediterranean, European and Eastern European destinations.

Southampton Airport is just 37 mins drive and 45 mins by train. In terms of larger transatlantic flights, London Heathrow is 1 hr 36 mins by car or 2 hrs 15 mins by bus, while a direct train is 2 hrs 49 mins.

London Gatwick is a 2 hrs drive. It's 2 hrs 43 mins by train or 4 hrs 15 mins if taking the coach. And, finally, Bristol Airport is a 1 hr 49 mins drive but 4 hrs by direct bus.
