Where is Glasgow?

Glasgow is based along the River Clyde in west-central Scotland. It is the most populous city in Scotland and the third most populous in the United Kingdom. The Glasgow population of over 600,000 people welcome millions of travellers visiting each year for work trips.

The visiting economy is perhaps so strong because of the popularity of the University of Glasgow, one of the longest-running universities in the world, or the fact Glasgow has commonly ranked amongst the top ten ‘Best Cities in the World’.

What’s more, with three nearby airports (Glasgow Airport, Glasgow Prestwick Airport & Cumbernauld Airport), its own underground system and intercity rail links with all the major cities of the UK, Glasgow is very much a player on both the British and the world stage.

Glasgow Businesses

Once a huge manufacturing hub, Glasgow has now also become an important financial centre in Scotland. The economy is immensely diversified, attracting a great mix of business and foreign investment across a range of sectors, including digital technology, tourism, engineering, finance and education.

In the UK, the city is the fifth most visited location, with a significant portion of those people visiting the countless Glasgow business parks, such as the Atlantic Quay Glasgow. The city generates around £40 billion GVA each year, making Glasgow without doubt one of the largest economies in the UK.

Corporate travellers looking for practical accommodation will find Glasgow serviced apartments can give them their own safe and convenient ‘home-away-from-home’ right in the heart of Scotland’s main business area, or wherever they wish to base themselves.

Things to Do in Glasgow

In recent years, Glasgow has often been named one of the UK’s top cultural and creative cities. As with any large city in the UK, it has a busy, energetic feel and the great number of Glasgow restaurants, bars and cafes mean there is always somewhere visitors can relax and socialise. The city is known for its great nightlife too, popular amongst Glasgow students.

There are several open spaces to enjoy too, with beautiful parks and squares to be found all over the city. You could enjoy a stroll through Kelvingrove Park or Glasgow Green, a beautiful city centre park, that contains several popular landmarks such as Nelson’s Monument and St. Andrew’s Suspension Bridge, as well as attractive fountains.

People living in Glasgow are also fond of Pollok Country Park, located just outside the city. This 360-acre park was named Britain’s Best Park in 2006, then in 2008 was awarded the title of Europe’s Best Park, making it truly one of the top Glasgow attractions.

Also worth a visit are the bustling Glasgow shopping centres, Merchant City and Princes Square. Princes has a selection of high-end shops to browse through and was even voted Scotland’s best shopping centre making it amongst the best retail experiences in the UK. What’s more, the abundance of city apartments in Glasgow make visiting the shopping centre and all the other city attractions incredibly easy.

Most museums, galleries and other great landmarks in Glasgow are free to visit. The Gallery of Modern art was established in 1996 but is located in a splendid building from 1778 and hosts temporary exhibitions and workshops. While the Riverside Museum, in contrast, is an award-winning transport museum, displaying over 3000 objects and interactive displays where you can go back in time and walk through the Glasgow streets and visit different places.

Each of these museums and tremendous historic sites are always just within walking distance of the many available aparthotels in Glasgow.

Although the city is very pedestrian-friendly, with the centre and major shopping streets dominated by foot traffic, the subway offers a quick and easy route across a wider area. This is the third-oldest underground system in the world, serving the city centre, West End (including the Glasgow University area) and the Ibrox Stadium.

Overall, the subway runs a double circle; around the city centre and the inner suburbs. There is a flat rate for single travels and an unlimited daily pass is available. Trains run generally every 5 - 10 minutes.

Glasgow Central Station

Glasgow's railway network is the largest in the UK outside of London with two major rail stations; Central situated on Gordon Street and Queens Street offering regular services to other areas of Scotland and major English cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and London.

Central provides most services within the suburban network, but also stretches out to the Inverclyde and Ayrshire coasts. From Queens Street, there are direct trains to London taking 4 hours and 30 minutes. Both stations are easy to get to by foot, or by regular bus services from apartments in Glasgow city centre.

Buchanan Station

First Glasgow is the main operator, offering services generally every 10 minutes on the main routes through the city. Towards the evening, some services do start to become less frequent, but with other operators available it is not hard to find an alternative route not far from your Glasgow accommodation.
