About Glasgow

Overview

With a distinguished manufacturing past, Glasgow is now a centre of finance and has Scotland's largest economy.

About Glasgow

Corporate travellers looking for self-catering accommodation will find SITU's serviced apartments in Glasgow give them their own safe and convenient city apartments right in the centre of Scotland’s main business area. With three nearby airports, its own underground system and intercity rail links with all the major cities of the UK, Glasgow is very much a player on both the British and the world stage.

Once a manufacturing hub with a proud Victorian past still evident in much of its architecture, Glasgow has also become an important financial centre and is a cosmopolitan city with a flourishing culture that visitors staying in our serviced apartments there are well-placed to make the most of.

Glasgow boasts some stunning architecture and different styles are present throughout the city. Kelvingrove Museum, which opened way back in 1901, plays host to world-famous masterpieces and shares its red sandstone facade with Kelvin Hall on the opposite side of the street. Both buildings should be on your must-visit list when exploring Glasgow, along with the city’s beautiful cathedral. Built in the 12th century, Glasgow Cathedral has not technically been the seat of a bishop since 1690. However, like many other cathedrals in Scotland built during the pre-reformation period, it is an active place for Christian worship and hosts a Church of Scotland congregation.

Most museums, galleries and other great landmarks in Glasgow are free to visit. The Gallery of Modern art was established in 1996, but is located in a splendid building from 1778 and hosts temporary exhibitions and workshops. While the Riverside Museum, in contrast, was built in 2011 and is a beautiful masterpiece of modern architecture. The Riverside Museum is an award-winning transport museum, displaying over 3000 objects and providing a comprehensive history of transportation. The museum offers interactive displays where you can walk through the Glasgow streets and visit different places. You can also enjoy the feeling of old public transport and discover all about Glasgow shipbuilding history.

There are a number of open spaces to enjoy in Glasgow, too. Beautiful parks and squares are to be found all over the city. You could enjoy a stroll through Glasgow Green, a beautiful city centre park, that contains a number of popular landmarks such as Nelson’s Monument and St. Andrew’s Suspension Bridge, as well as attractive fountains.  There’s also Pollock Country Park, located just outside the city. This 360-acre park was named Britain’s Best Park in 2006, then in 2008 was awarded the title of Europe’s Best Park, beating off competition from parks in Italy, France, Germany and Sweden.

As with any large city in the UK, Glasgow has a busy, energetic feel and offers a great number of restaurants, bars and cafes. As Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow sees millions of travellers visiting each year for both work and leisure trips. Finding accommodation in Glasgow can be hard, especially for people travelling for work, looking for a home-away-from-home feel. When searching for accommodation in Glasgow, aparthotels can be a good choice for corporate travellers. SITU’s short stay apartments in Glasgow give travellers their own flexible space from which to make their stay in the city productive and memorable.

Transport

By tube

Glasgow runs a double circle around the city centre and the inner suburbs. The subway interlinks with the overground services at Buchanan Street/Queen Street and Partick Station

Although the city is very pedestrian-friendly, with the centre and major shopping streets dominated by foot traffic, the subway offers a quick and easy route across a wider area. The subway serves the city centre, West End (including the Glasgow University area) and the Ibrox Stadium. There is a flat rate for single travels and an unlimited daily pass is available. Trains run generally every 5 - 10 minutes.

By train

Glasgow has two major rail stations; Central situated on Gordon Street and Queens Street offering regular services to other areas of Scotland and major English cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and London.

Both stations are easy to get to by foot, or by regular bus services. Glasgow's network is the largest in the UK outside of London.

Central provides most services within the suburban network, but also stretches out to the Inverclyde and Ayrshire coasts. From Queens Street, there are direct trains to London taking 4 hours and 30 minutes.

By bus

The bus station is an 8 minute walk from Central and a 3 minute walk from Queens Street.

Buchanan Bus Station is situated on Buchanan Street, next to the Buchanan Galleries Shopping Centre and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. First Glasgow is the main operator, offering services generally every 10 minutes on the main routes through the city.

Towards the evening, some services do start to become less frequent, but with other operators available it is not hard to find an alternative route.

By air

Glasgow Airport is situated just outside of the city along the M8.

Glasgow can be easily reached from the M8 between junctions 18-15. The M8 also provides links to the M74 onward to the M6.
