HISTORY

High Barnet is often regarded as the oldest town across the borough. However, evidence of its earliest existence is limited. The earliest record of historic significance in the town came out of the 12th-century charter. King John approved this charter at the time to grant the town the go-ahead to hold a market there once a week. The market still runs weekly to this day along the Barnet High Street.

The town actually developed and grew around the market in the centuries after it was granted. Word spread of its success. As a result of being based just outside the capital, the town became a natural stop-off point. Inns and stable yards, therefore, grew in number in High Barnet, with the Mitre Inn being amongst the oldest remaining examples. Then followed the issue of the second market charter and biannual fair for the sale of livestock in the late sixteenth century. The town managed to become London’s main meat market as a result. It was around this time too that High Barnet was also recognised as ‘Chipping Barnet’.

It is believed that the name ‘High Barnet’ was not socially recognised until the opening of High Barnet Railway Station in 1872. This opening was accompanied by the introduction of New Barnet, Totteridge, Whetstone stations as well as many suburban roads that still exist in the town today.

Developments such as these meant that High Barnet went from being part of Hertfordshire (until 1965) to being merged into Greater London.

Visitors to the town staying in High Barnet short term accommodation should utilise some of their free time by visiting Barnet Museum, the home of vast archives dedicated to telling the story of how the town came to be.
