A rich architectural heritage has made this city an attractive place to visit. It’s actually the UK’s second-most filmed city after London. In fact, it often stands in for London—as well as for Moscow, Paris, Rome, New York and Chicago. Nicknamed as the UK’s Northern Hollywood, Liverpool served as a filming location for high profile films such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part I) and Capitan America. The city even has its own film festival and, of course, when overseas film crews arrive here and set up shop, they look for the best Liverpool luxury serviced apartments available. That’s where SITU comes in.
The city’s history makes for a wide variety of different architectural styles. You can see 16th century Tudor buildings right alongside modern contemporary architecture. Most of the city’s notable buildings are, however, dated from the late 18th century, as it was during this period that the city grew as one of the biggest ports in the British Empire. It is also considered to be the finest example of a ‘Victorian city’ in England, with several areas listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
The refurbished Albert Dock area, which served as a series of docks and warehouses from 1846 until into the 1970s, was redeveloped in the early 1980s and is now a popular destination Liverpool's for tourists visiting the city. Built near the mouth of the River Mersey, the area today features a number of hotels and excellent restaurants. Just across from Albert Dock is the Echo Arena and Convention centre, which hosted the MTV Europe awards in 2008 and continues to welcome a wide number of high profile international events. Only a short walk from Albert Dock, the High Street has a large pedestrianised area and is the main shopping centre of the city.
Internationally known for music and recognised as the World Capital City of Pop, Liverpool as a city has produced the most number one singles of any city in the world. As the birthplace of probably the most well-known band in the history of pop music, The Beatles, Liverpool offers several attractions that music lovers will enjoy. The Beatles Statue on the waterfront is an absolute must while you are there.
Liverpool also has more galleries and national museums than any other city in the UK, apart from London. You can visit Liverpool’s National Museum, the Tate or many of the smaller art galleries situated around the city.
