About Nottingham

Overview

Most famous for Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood, in modern times Nottingham has a long-standing reputation for science-based business and boasts its own bioscience park.

About Nottingham

A large volume of business travellers brought in by the city’s longstanding association with science-based businesses mean that serviced apartments in Nottingham are in high demand.

The city also has some of the most famous medieval history in the UK, fictitious or otherwise. Business travellers using short stay apartments in the city will find a wealth of places to go, including the legendary Nottingham Castle and the picturesque Sherwood Forest, as well as plenty of eating out options – possibly even a food and drink festival.

Members of aristocracy lived in the castle until 1875, the year it was transformed into an art gallery and museum. You can enjoy fabulous views from the castle, which overlooks some of the city. Nottingham is known to be one of the best places for a night out in the UK, with a lot of cosy pubs and chic cocktail bars situated in the city centre.

Taking a Robin Hood tour combines history and education in a fun way, dipping into medieval folklore and much more. Interestingly, Robin Hood’s well-known arch-nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham, is a real position that is held by a real person. Luckily it has nothing in common with the fictional character and their job is to greet visitors of the city and promote Nottingham's historic association.

However, being the home of the heroic outlaw is not the only interesting fact about Nottingham. Ibuprofen was invented in the city by Dr Stewart Adams, who tested the painkilling chemical on himself for a hangover. In fact, he worked for Boots, the UK’s biggest pharmacy chain, which started in Nottingham in 1849. We also have to thank Nottingham native John Knight for traffic lights, something which he invented in 1866. The first traffic light ever was placed on the junction at Westminster in London.

25 miles north of Nottingham are Creswell Crags, caves containing Britain’s only known Ice Age art that show engravings of animals, birds and people. The city is also known for its deep-toned bell, nicknamed Little John, which chimes from within the dome atop Nottingham’s Council House. You can also visit Wollaton Hall, which was used as the setting for Bruce Wayne’s manor in the 2012 Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, by Christopher Nolan. Since the release of the film, the numbers of visitors have risen each year, something which has been credited as the ‘Batman Effect’.

SITU’s Nottingham accommodation gives flexible access to a city centre that boasts a multiple award-winning public transport system. Our aparthotels and self-catering apartments in Nottingham are located within easy reach of some of the city’s top facilities, like the Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall, as well as the Intu Victoria shopping centre.

Transport

Regular trains run from to Nottingham to most UK cities.

Nottingham trains run to and from London St Pancras. Regular train services also run to Birmingham, Derby, Leicester, Crewe, Sheffield and Leeds. The station is located just 5 minutes away from the city centre.

By bus

There are two bus stations in the city, Broadmarsh and Victoria. Bus operators out of both stations serve most UK destinations.

The Gorrila Bus operator offers services to Liverpool, Manchester, Yorkshire and Birmingham. The National Express runs regular services to London. There is also an extensive local bus service provided by Trent Barton and Nottingham City Transport.
