About Belfast

Overview

Belfast has enjoyed an extended period of growth and investment in the last 20 years or so, shedding the spectres of its past to become a friendly and culturally rich city, and a top place to visit both for business and pleasure

About Belfast

Now free of its turbulent past, Belfast has quickly moved on to become a flourishing city with ongoing development and investment and was one of National Geographic’s top destinations for 2012. A great youth culture has grown in the city, making the centre of Belfast a real place to be after dark. For somewhere that once appeared so segregated, Northern Ireland’s capital has lost its boundaries.

Travellers coming to our Belfast serviced apartments also find it a perfect gateway to the surrounding area, with some of the most breath-taking coastal landscapes in the British Isles. Sights such as St Anne’s Cathedral, the ‘Titanic quarter’ – the birthplace of the famous, yet ill-fated, ship – and Belfast Castle, also provide plenty to do in the city itself.

The Titanic Belfast is one of the largest attractions in the city. The famous liner was constructed in Belfast at Harland & Wolff shipyard. It offers the visitors an authentic Titanic experience and is a must-see while exploring the city. The attraction stands on the spot where the liner was designed and built. It has interactive galleries, where you can explore sights, sounds and smells of the famous ship as well as hear stories of the city back in the 1912 and about the people who made her.

Another great attraction to visit is Belfast Castle, built between 1811 and 1870 and designed in the Scottish baronial style. The original ‘Castle of Belfast’ was built in the 12th century by the Normans where the modern-day high street now stands, but was burnt down in the early 1700s and this lead the third Marquess of Donegall to build a new one. The current castle was refurbished by the Belfast city council between 1934 and 1978 and now boasts an antique shop, a restaurant and is a very popular venue for the visitors.

Belfast Zoo is one of the oldest visitor attractions and first opened to the public in 1934. With more than 140 species currently in residence, Belfast Zoo is a leading and award-winning site entertaining more than 300,000 visitors each year. If you like to be surrounded by nature, Belfast Botanic Gardens should be on your list of sightings too. Established in 1828, the gardens are an important part of the city’s Victorian heritage. Today it is a popular park for residents and tourists, often acting as a venue for concerts, festivals and many other events.

And if you have any time left after all that, perhaps you could take the Game of Thrones tour. Belfast and its surroundings serve as a major filming location filming location for the popular show. You can take a tour to discover the real Seven Kingdoms and explore the places you’ve seen on TV.

When choosing accommodation in Belfast, SITU offers a wide variety of options. There are luxurious aparthotels available in Belfast, or you could select a short-term-let for self-catering apartments. Our city apartments in Belfast can be found in a number of key locations around the city, including in the Obel Tower, an impressive structure and the island’s tallest tower. This is conveniently placed close to Belfast City Airport, which links well both to the UK mainland and other destinations across Europe. Although there are public transport options, it’s definitely easiest to get around Belfast and the surrounding area by car, and this may be worth bearing in mind for those coming to the city.
