About Birmingham

Overview

Known as the UK's second city, Birmingham has undergone extensive regeneration in recent years to ensure this status continues.

About Birmingham

In recent years, Birmingham has undergone extensive regeneration in order to ensure it is continuously marked as the second largest urban area in the United Kingdom. Described by many as a vibrant and diverse city, Birmingham welcomes individuals from across the globe for both business and pleasure.

The city has 34 million visitors a year, one million of those are international visitors. Boasting the third biggest airport in the UK, Birmingham is within 4 hours of 90% of the UK, while London is only 1 hour and 25 minutes away on the train.

It is one of the youngest cities in Europe, with 40% of residents under 25 years of age it is no wonder that Birmingham hosts over 50 festivals each year and has one of the largest shopping centres in Europe. A high number of ultra-modern arenas show the city’s love of music and there are several Jazz festivals held each year. In 1960, Birmingham was often compared to Liverpool, with many popular bands originating from the city. Most well-known were Black Sabbath, although half of Led Zeppelin also came from Birmingham. The city has a lot to offer to classical music fans, as well, with two highly professional symphony orchestras regularly performing here.

Modern Birmingham offers a rich cultural experience to visitors. Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is best known for its outstanding collections of classic, with a strong collection from the 17th century. While Birmingham Repertory Theatre is Britain’s longest-established producing theatre, which was rebuilt in 2013, has three auditoria and a wide variety of productions on offer.

Around 40 percent of British Jewellery is produced in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter – about 12 million items per year – and it has been around for centuries, with records showing 26 jewellers registered in Birmingham by 1780. The city council acknowledges the historical importance of the quarter, with the whole area being designated a conservation area since 2000 and receiving World Heritage Status in 2008.

For a night out, you could always visit the Mailbox, a hub for high-end shopping and luxury bars and restaurants. There are designer outlets there, exclusive places to eat and beautiful waterfront views.  With a vibrant and active nightlife, as well as cinemas and other attractions, Birmingham can offer a great variety of evenings out.

Birmingham is a major transport hub, with Birmingham New Street being the busiest rail interchange in the UK outside of London. The city is also served by four major motorways and is home to the original ‘Spaghetti Junction’, a name originally given to the M6’s Gravely Hill Interchange, but now used to refer to complex road interchanges across the world.
