About Edinbugh

The historic Scottish city of Edinburgh has an impressive castle, a vibrant nightlife and a renowned arts scene.

About Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a historic city with a legendary castle, a charming Old Town and one of the best dining and entertainment scenes in the UK. It also happens to be the UK’s most important financial centre outside of London.

It is easy to get around the city by bus. However, Edinburgh is best explored on foot, as there are amazing views, hidden courtyards, secret gardens and stunning architectural details to be discovered almost everywhere you look.

Edinburgh is built on seven hills, and while wandering the winding streets of the medieval Old Town, you may notice that the layout is typical of the old quarters of many other European cities. But many would argue – and not just the locals – that Edinburgh’s Old Town is especially picturesque with the iconic castle presiding over the city from its rocky crag, the remnants of a now-dormant ancient volcano. Great events have taken place within its walls and it has witnessed many sieges. The castle contains the oldest building in Edinburgh, St. Margaret’s Chapel, built by King David l in honour of his mother, it is thought to date back to at least 1130. Other places of interest nearby include the Royal Museum of Scotland, Surgeons' Hall, the Royal Festival Theatre and The University of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh’s New Town is often considered to be a masterpiece of city planning and, together with the Old Town, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With grid-like Georgian architecture, the New Town features the best shopping places in the city, and indeed, shopping in Edinburgh is a fantastic experience that caters to all tastes, styles and budgets. Luxury brands, high street stores and beautiful boutiques, New Town has it all. Famous Princes Street is home to many chain shops, while George Street, once the financial centre, now has numerous modern bars, many of which occupy former banking halls.

Edinburgh is increasingly cosmopolitan, too, with five Michelin-starred restaurants, vibrant nightlife and a varied and accessible arts scene. Or, you could head to The Elephant Café, where J.K. Rowling wrote some of the first Harry Potter book, The Philosopher’s Stone. Edinburgh was also home to Robert Louis Stevenson, author of the famous gothic novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
