About Edinbugh

Overview

The historic Scottish city of Edinburgh has an impressive castle, a vibrant nightlife and a renowned arts scene.

About Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a historic city with a legendary castle, a charming Old Town and one of the best dining and entertainment scenes in the UK. It also happens to be the UK’s most important financial centre outside of London.

It is easy to get around the city by bus. However, Edinburgh is best explored on foot, as there are amazing views, hidden courtyards, secret gardens and stunning architectural details to be discovered almost everywhere you look.

Edinburgh is built on seven hills, and while wandering the winding streets of the medieval Old Town, you may notice that the layout is typical of the old quarters of many other European cities. But many would argue – and not just the locals – that Edinburgh’s Old Town is especially picturesque with the iconic castle presiding over the city from its rocky crag, the remnants of a now-dormant ancient volcano. Great events have taken place within its walls and it has witnessed many sieges. The castle contains the oldest building in Edinburgh, St. Margaret’s Chapel, built by King David l in honour of his mother, it is thought to date back to at least 1130. Other places of interest nearby include the Royal Museum of Scotland, Surgeons' Hall, the Royal Festival Theatre and The University of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh’s New Town is often considered to be a masterpiece of city planning and, together with the Old Town, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With grid-like Georgian architecture, the New Town features the best shopping places in the city, and indeed, shopping in Edinburgh is a fantastic experience that caters to all tastes, styles and budgets. Luxury brands, high street stores and beautiful boutiques, New Town has it all. Famous Princes Street is home to many chain shops, while George Street, once the financial centre, now has numerous modern bars, many of which occupy former banking halls.

Edinburgh is increasingly cosmopolitan, too, with five Michelin-starred restaurants, vibrant nightlife and a varied and accessible arts scene. Or, you could head to The Elephant Café, where J.K. Rowling wrote some of the first Harry Potter book, The Philosopher’s Stone. Edinburgh was also home to Robert Louis Stevenson, author of the famous gothic novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Whether you’re planning a business trip, a pleasure outing or a little bit of both, the Scottish capital has plenty to offer. SITU has an extensive list of Edinburgh city apartments. We can offer everything from self-catering to aparthotels. Choosing our accommodation for a short-term stay in Edinburgh allows you to benefit from a greater level of comfort and more flexibility than regular hotels are equipped to offer.

On this page, you can peruse a short list of Edinburgh serviced apartments that we have vetted, and ultimately selected, based on their high standards of quality and service. Each apartment on this list provides weekly housekeeping and a range of other services and facilities. Transport

By train

The main railway station is Waverley Railway Station, adjacent to Princes Street, Edinburgh Castle and the Princes Street Gardens.

Edinburgh Rail is the city's primary rail hub. Direct trains to and from London go regularly and the journey between capitals takes on average 4 hours 30 minutes.

There is a shuttle service that runs every 15 minutes to Glasgow Queen Street Station, and an hourly service that provides connections to Dundee and Aberdeen.

By bus

The city is served by the major inter-city bus companies from around Scotland and England. Most long distance services start and end in the bus station in St Andrew Square.

There are 2 major bus companies that operate in the city area. The Lothian buses predominatly service the city centre destinations, while the First buses operate routes on the outskirt areas east and west of the city.

By air

The Edinburgh International Airport is located just 10 miles west of the city, offering a wide range of domestic and international flights.

Many of Scotland's visitors choose for fly to London and take a connecting flight to Edinburgh. However, the airport does have direct flights to major locations in Europe such as Amsterdam, Madrid, Dublin and Frankfurt, and direct flights further afield to and from Newark in the USA (a 25 minute train journey from New York City).

The airport has a dedicated bus service, the Airlink Express, operating from outside the airport terminal to the city centre at Waverley Bridge. During the day, the Airlink Express runs every 10 minutes, and continues throughout the night at 30 minute intervals, with the journey taking about 25 minutes.
