About Milton Keynes

Overview

Built in the 1960s, and with innovative layout and design, Milton Keynes is a relatively young town by UK standards. Yet, it still comes with plenty of character and, some would argue, its own particular identity.

About Milton Keynes

The city of Milton Keynes exists as the principal settlement of the Borough of Milton Keynes, which belongs to the county of Buckinghamshire. The city itself accounts for approximately 20% and 90% of the overall borough’s area and population respectively. Around 250,000 live in the city, but this is also consistently rising. In fact, by 2026, estimates the number will pass 300,000. Milton Keynes, of course, is also capable of dealing with a visiting or relocating population to the area too.

A steady flow of corporate travellers requiring serviced apartments in Milton Keynes attests to the thoughtful design and layout of the town, whose excellent transport links have proved to be a real attractor for businesses. These links stretch ideally beyond the city boundaries too, with the area being linking conveniently to some of the major hubs for business in the UK. These include London (50miles), Birmingham (70miles), Cambridge (50 miles) and Oxford (45miles). Milton Keynes, therefore, acts as a potentially convenient commuter town. It prides itself on being able to accommodate corporates looking to relocate in a slightly quieter South East English district. These qualities are clear when guests stay in our range of Milton Keynes corporate housing.

HISTORY

Some would argue the Milton Keynes' history officially began in 1967 when it was born as a post-war ‘new town’. Throughout the 1960s the UK government believed a new generation of settlements in South East England would relieve London's housing congestion crisis. Milton Keynes was one of the ‘new cities’ to be established, from an area of mainly farmland and undeveloped villages. However, prior to this, the area did contain a rich history. It was here that the largest hoard of Bronze Age jewellery ever to be excavated in Britain was found. Many believe the oldest golden coin in the country came from Milton Keynes.

The archetypal new town is sometimes a little maligned in a country so full of history and older settlements. However, this uniqueness is not only a part of the town’s charm but, about 50 years on, it’s difficult to argue that Milton Keynes is anything other than a success. Witnessing this change is, in fact, a big reason many tourists opt to visit the area. Typically for extended stays. So, for those staying longer in the city, SITU's Milton Keynes extended stay apartments are a perfect solution.

BUSINESS AT MILTON KEYNES

Milton Keynes is widely regarded as a UK area designed specifically for business growth. It is now becoming the top city for business start-ups outside of London. However, it is not just UK businesses taking advantage of the area either. Thousands of companies across the globe are opting to relocate there. According to Invest in Milton Keynes, the city is “home to some of the largest concentrations of North American, German, Japanese and Taiwanese firms in the UK.”

The grid system layout and many roundabouts may draw derision from some, but it really works for getting around. Free-flowing roads result in some of the fastest commuting times in Europe along with superb motorway access as Milton Keynes’ centre is just minutes away from the M1. The train links are also great, not only to the big cities to the north and south but on local routes too. We have many Milton Keynes aparthotels based just outside the city’s train station to enable simple rail travel not too far from a guest’s accommodation.

A ‘can do’ attitude is evident across the area. After all, Milton Keynes was amongst the top three for cities with the highest levels of productivity. This is supported by the findings which suggest Milton Keynes is also within the top ten cities for the highest weekly workplace earnings and general job creation. Clearly, the foundations for a thriving business lifestyle exists in Milton Keynes. Thousands of people opt to book stays in the area every day to take advantage. Relocating businesses to the area or simply corporate tripping here can be most fulfilling when staying in Milton Keynes corporate accommodation.

THINGS TO SEE

The city of Milton Keynes and its surrounding borough areas has something to do and see for everyone. First of all, Milton Keynes is an excellent shopping destination, with an incredibly well-served town centre. The Centre: MK has been likened to the Crystal Palace in design, and, rather impressively, has different climates in its different arcades. The more adventurous types can even opt to take on the Snozone inside the Xscape building within the Centre MK. The indoor ski slope complex can allow corporates and their families a great opportunity to let off some steam.

This is the same for Gullivers Land too, sat just on the edge of Willen Lakeside Park. This old-fashioned amusement park is also fantastic for families, providing themed accommodation and short break packages. Overall, the MK shopping centre and its attractions, as well as Gullivers Land, can be easily accessible from SITU’s many Milton Keynes serviced apartments.

Business or leisurely trips to Milton Keynes do not necessarily have to be overly hectic or sporty though. Visitors to the area can appreciate the green spaces the city and the borough possess. The likes of the North Loughton Valley Park, Ouzel Valley Park, Campbell Park and Willen Lakeside Park just on the edge of the city can all make for a relaxing, chilled day out in Milton Keynes. The Caldecotte Lake, in the south of the borough and managed by the Parks Trust, is a worthwhile visit too. The lake is stunning, and its surrounding acres of beautiful parkland provides a home for a variety of wildlife. Birdwatchers especially can enjoy visiting Caldecotte!

Ultimately, enjoying every aspect of the city can be comfortable when staying in Milton Keynes furnished housing. Staying in a home from home is the key to making a business trip to Milton Keynes worthwhile.

Transport

By Air

Due to Milton Keynes’ convenient central location amongst some of the country’s biggest business hubs the city, therefore, benefits from many surrounding airports. The closest international airport is London Luton (LCY), no further than forty minutes away from Milton Keynes city centre by car.

Other airports that can be accessed by train or car (around 1hr and a half) are London Stansted (STN), Heathrow (LHR) and Birmingham (BHX). Cranfield Airport (XUD) is also now an option for business aviation and private flights. Also, upon request, stays at many SITU’s Milton Keynes city apartments can include an airport transfer service.

By Train

The city itself only has one train station known simply as Milton Keynes Central train station. The station features along the West Coast Line, which goes as far as to terminate in Glasgow Central in the north and London Euston in the south. It sits conveniently just off the A509 road, right at the heart of the city’s centre.

The Borough of Milton Keynes, however, includes more available train stations which are; Wolverton, Bletchley, Fenny Stratford, Bow Brickhill and Woburn Sands. They are all managed by the company ‘West Midland Trains’.

By Bus

There are at least forty bus routes and services which operate across the Borough of Milton Keynes and the city itself. This enables easy transport across the Borough in areas such as Newport Pagnell, Bletchley and Wolverton.

The highest volume of services run out of the city centre of Milton Keynes, but many routes also run through the Milton Keynes railway station too.
