Tonbridge is situated on the River Medway in Kent, 40 miles to the south east of London, and despite bearing a similar name, is not to be confused with nearby Royal Tunbridge Wells approximately four miles further to the south.
This market town offers newcomers a minor challenge in relation to the pronunciation of Tonbridge itself, with some parties arguing for “Tone” and others for “Tun”. Either way your GPS will have no problems and there is easy access by road from the M25, M26 and M20.
It would be fair to describe Tonbridge as a bustling market town with great food, wide pavements and smooth flowing traffic all centred around the idyllic Tonbridge Castle, but this description hardly does it justice. Tonbridge is home to one of the more prestigious schools in the UK as well as being the location for one of the University of Kent’s campuses.
Local industry includes manufacturing and moulding and there are several well attended festivals and arts functions. Tonbridge provides an ideal base for business travellers seeking a quieter lifestyle away from nearby cities but within easy commuting distance to Maidstone and Royal Tunbridge Wells.
